Love, Hope & Treatment
Challenge
How might we create an integrated approach to raising awareness and improving care for people living with schizophrenia in Rwanda, Nigeria, Ghana, and Kenya?
Outcome
We created “Love, Hope, and Treatment”, a multi-country approach towards improving health outcomes for people with severe mental illness by improving the skills and knowledge of both HCPs, caregivers, and patients.
The approach
For patients, we prioritized empowerment and destigmatization through storytelling. Caregivers receive comprehensive support resources focusing on self-care and coping strategies. Healthcare professionals benefit from targeted training programs to enhance their ability to provide compassionate care. These include instructional digital video content and supplementary materials. Through this holistic strategy, we aim to foster understanding, acceptance, and support, ultimately improving outcomes for all affected stakeholders.
Educating Healthcare Professionals
We produced training videos for healthcare providers managing people living with schizophrenia, paired with informative HCP booklets. This integrated approach equips professionals with essential skills and resources for compassionate care, improving patient outcomes.

Much of the content from the Sister Pack is repackaged through short, punchy, TikTok style tutorial and testimonials by former TAA youth leaders and other young girls.
Understanding patients and caregivers
Through comic books, vivid stories of people living with schizophrenia captivate both caregivers and patients, emphasizing treatment adherence and destigmatization. We created a series of 4 comic books each telling a story about the patient and caregiver journeys. These narratives educate while promoting empathy, using compelling visuals to enhance understanding and holistic care approaches. There are also a series of activity pages that help patients stay on track with their treatment. These were then adapted for 3 more countries: Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria. For Nigeria, we turned these comics into videos for easy dissemination.

Co-designing with Community Health Workers:
We conducted a co-design workshop with the Community Health workers. Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Rwanda work directly with Rwanda Health Communication Center (RHCC) which is a division under RBC. We collaborated with CHWs to better understand how we can empower them to help people living with schizophrenia through distributing our campaign materials, promoting proactive patient behavior and fighting stigma.
This included observing a day in the life of a CHW, speaking to patients and working together to solution the most effective way to disseminate the materials for each target group.
