Challenge
How might we use the AFCON tournament to promote male involvement in their family’s vaccination routines?
Outcome
#teamvaccine, a multimedia campaign, and also one of the most viral campaigns recently executed by USAID.
Background
Routine Vaccination and Immunization rates across Africa have fallen as a result of the Covid-19 epidemic, creating a need for what public health experts refer to as “The Big Catch-up”. Similarly, complacency about the threat of a Covid-19 vaccine, especially among vulnerable populations that are at high risk of severe dsiease
Insight
With Africa’s biggest football tournament, AFCON, set to kick off, football fever was running sky high in Nigeria, Mozambique, Tanzania and Cameroon, who each fielded teams in the tournament. USAID Breakthrough Action had a bold idea: how can we channel men’s excitement for football towards becoming involved in their own family’s vaccination.
The Approach
The “Team Vaccine” campaign was born, encouraging men to show passion for the team that matters most, their families. Using well known football commentators and influencers for football=themed TV and radio ads, we created one of the most iconic public health campaigns in Africa. This was supported by a social media campaign with dozens of influencers who signed up to be part of “Team Vaccine”. USUAID BA’s teams on the ground set up viewpoints and handed out merchandise and, most importantly, offered vaccines to those who needed them
A series featuring fresh, fun and relatable content about the ins and outs of having a safe, healthy sex life.
Much of the content from the Sister Pack is repackaged through short, punchy, TikTok style tutorial and testimonials by former TAA youth leaders and other young girls.
